Born: 2nd June 1955
Early schooling in Bangladesh. Refused to participate in Intermediate exams (HSC) under Pakistani occupation. A Levels from Liverpool Institute and graduation in Biochemistry and Genetics from Liverpool University in the 70s followed by PhD in Organic Chemistry from Bedford College, London University.
Started photography in 1980 in London. Won Harvey Harris Trophy from London Arts Council in 1983. Started working professionally in London at “Young Rascals” studio in 1983.
Returned to Bangladesh in 1984. Set up “Fotoworld” in 1984. Became Secretary General of Bangladesh Photographic Society in 1984. Started freelancing in 1985. Became President of Bangladesh Photographic Society in 1987. Setup Bangladesh Photographic Institute in 1989.
Setup Drik PIcture Library in 1989. Setup Bangladesh’s first email network in 1994. Joined international jury of World Press Photo in 1994. Selected for Jury again in 1995. Setup Pathshala. South Asian Institute of Photography in 1989. Again in international jury of WPP in1999. Setup Chobi Mela, Festival of Photography in Asia in 2000. Setup Bangladesh Human Rights Network banglarights.net in 2001. Chair of World Press Photo international jury in 2003. Setup South Asian Media Academy in 2010. In internatinoal jury of Prix Pictet in 2011.
